GLOBAL MARKETS
Stocks got off to a cautious start in Asia on Monday ahead of an action-packed week that is seemingly certain to see the U.S. Federal Reserve resume its easing cycle, and perhaps leave the door wide open to a series of cuts.
WORLD OIL PRICES
Oil prices were little changed on Monday as investors assessed the impact of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries that could disrupt its crude and fuel exports, while also eyeing U.S. fuel-demand growth.
SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS
The South African rand softened on Friday with investor focus on the release of domestic consumer price inflation data and a rate-setting meeting next week.
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO SECURITY
Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo will commit to working with third parties, including the U.S., to revamp their mineral supply chains and develop reforms, according to a draft of an economic framework seen by Reuters, as they seek to spur investment following a peace deal reached in Washington.
TANZANIA POLITICS
Tanzania’s national electoral commission on Saturday accepted the nomination papers of Luhaga Mpina, a senior politician from the second largest opposition party, enabling him to contest next month’s presidential election following a court order.
NIGERIA OIL
Nigeria reduced its crude oil losses to 9,600 barrels per day by July, marking the lowest level since 2009, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) said on Friday.
SOUTH SUDAN SECURITY
South Sudan’s opposition has accused the government of trying to enforce “authoritarian control and one-tribe rule” after First Vice President Riek Machar was charged with orchestrating militia attacks and suspended from his role.
