South African rand holds near multi-month high as Iran sanctions loom - REUTERS
The South African rand started the week on a firm footing, trading close to its strongest level since the beginning of the Iran war, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar, higher gold prices and strength across emerging-market currencies.
Rand Strengthens
At 0636 GMT, the rand traded at 15.99 per U.S. dollar, gaining approximately 0.2>#/strong### and remaining close to the strongest level reached since the Iran conflict began.
Gold Provides Support
Gold, one of South Africa's most important exports, climbed to its highest level in more than three months.
The precious metal benefited from weakness in the U.S. dollar as investors awaited important U.S. inflation data and a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh later in the week.
Higher gold prices are generally supportive of the rand because South Africa is a significant gold producer and exporter.
Dollar Remains Weak
The U.S. dollar remained close to multi-month lows as investors awaited details of a new U.S. sanctions package against Iran.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was scheduled to provide further details after warning that Washington was preparing particularly severe sanctions against Iran.
Iran's foreign minister dismissed the threat of additional U.S. sanctions.
