Report: Only 51% of Nigerian households have access to electricity - THE CABLE
Only about half or 51 percent of Nigeria’s households have access to electricity, according to the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS).
The survey was conducted by the National Population Commission (NPC), Gates Foundation, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Global Fund.
The 2024 NDHS is the sixth Demographic and Health Survey conducted in Nigeria since 1990 as part of The DHS Programme.
According to the NDHS, 98 percent of the household population use clean fuels or technologies for lighting, such as electricity, solar lanterns, rechargeable flashlights or lanterns, battery-powered torches or lanterns, and biogas lamps.
“Twenty-two percent of the household population uses clean fuels and technologies for cooking, including stoves/cookers using electricity, LPG/natural gas/biogas, solar, and alcohol/ethanol,” the report reads.
“The use of clean fuels and technologies for cooking is much higher in urban areas than in rural areas (42% versus 5%).
“Just 7% of the household population uses clean fuels and technologies for space heating, including central heating, electricity, LPG/natural gas/biogas, solar air heaters, and alcohol/ethanol. (16% in urban areas and 4% in rural areas).”
Overall, the survey noted that 22 percent of the household population use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating, and lighting.
