The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) spent N464 billion on printing, distributing, processing and disposing of currency notes in 2025, marking a sharp increase in the cost of currency issuance compared to the previous year, the apex bank's latest financial statements have revealed.
The expenditure, captured under the bank's currency issuance operations, rose from N238.6 billion recorded in the 2024 fiscal year to N464 billion in 2025, reflecting an increase of more than 94 percent within one year.
Details contained in the financial statements released by the CBN showed that the expenditure covered the printing of new banknotes, their distribution across the country, processing of currency in circulation and the disposal of unfit notes withdrawn from use.
