Senate Moves To Intervene In Fuel Scarcity, Naira Depreciation - NEW TELEGRAPH

APRIL 29, 2024

The Senate is expected to focus on the most burning issues facing Nigerians at resumption tomorrow. The Senate will keep the severe fuel scarcity being faced by Nigerians on the front burner.

It will also discuss the electricity tariff increase, fresh naira depreciation against major foreign currencies, and the country’s security challenges.

The Committee on the Media and Public Affairs Chairman, Yemi Adaramodu, gave these indications while addressing the Senate Press Corps at the weekend. Adaramodu said: “We have some bills and motions that are pending; we will treat them.

“The Committee on Power has started its work on the issue of electricity and tariff. So, by the time we resume, we will go into full swing and get their reports. “There are other issues we are going to visit when we resume. Like the security and economic issues.

“We are glad that this government is getting some mileage on these issues, and we are also going to focus on them when we resume. “Also, we are going to take the issue of Constitution review and electoral reforms seriously immediately after we resume.

“Already, committees have been constituted for those very germane constitutional issues before we went on recess. “We are going to ensure that we do what the people want. “We are going to meet with critical stakeholders in the spectrum of Nigeria.

There will be public outings; there will be visits to states and we will invite the public to make inputs on what we are going to put in electoral reforms and constitutional reforms.” On the current fuel scarcity, the Senate said it would soon be solved.

According to Adaramodu, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has claimed that fuel scarcity is not due to a lack of fuel at the depots but as a result of a lack of logistics to convey the product to filling stations. He said if the situation persists the Senate would intervene to tackle the problem.
